Information for Teens

California law requires anyone under 18 years of age to attend 30 hours of classroom training (Driver Education) to obtain a provisional permit, and 6 hours of behind the wheel training (Driver Training) to obtain a provisional license.

Steps to obtain a Provisional Permit
  1. Complete Drivers Education
  2. Enroll in Driver Training
  3. Pass DMV written test
Steps to obtain a Provisional License
  1. Complete Driver Training
  2. Complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent/guardian (10 hours must be night driving)
  3. Wait at least 6 months after receiving Provisional Permit before taking drive test
  4. Pass DMV drive test
